On the Margins of a Sierra Without Gold (2016–present)
After years of frequent trips to the city of Goiás, the transition from visitor to resident radically transformed my axis of photographic observation. Situated on the margins of the Serra Dourada - an important geographic and geopolitical landmark - the city was the state capital until the 1930s and is recognized today as a UNESCO Historical and Cultural Heritage site. This long-term project, however, looks at aspects beyond the city's tourist image. The focus here is not on historical facts or colonial architecture, but on the contemporary city marked by artistic and rural practices, and by the economic decline that followed the exhaustion of the gold cycle and its removal as the state capital.
The work investigates life in Goiás, or at least the life seen by the photographer in the city. Through peripheral urban scenes and landscapes, portraits, and flash-lit night parties, it seeks the experience of "living here." It is a continuous reflection on how we organize ourselves in society.
Aesthetically, the project follows the definitive transition to the digital format. Starting in monochrome with a 28mm lens (Fujifilm X-E1), the series evolved first into color and then to the 35mm focal length (Fujifilm X100V). The color palette rejects exaggerated saturation; instead, it embraces the weight of primary colors under the strong, harsh, and often cloudless sun.
Currently in its consolidation phase, "Às Margens de uma Serra sem Ouro" is being structured as a formal 24-month research project, slated for completion in 2028. In this final stage, the photographic investigation will unfold into audiovisual experimentations through videorrelatos (video stories), culminating in a visual and sound archive about the experience of inhabiting the oldest city in the state.
